When I was in grade 6, I became very ill and was unable to physically attend school. I can understand how frustrating that may have been for my teacher, as my doctors struggled to find answers at the time regarding why I was so sick (i.e. the reasons behind why I was unable to attend school). My teacher, however, was incredibly understanding and empathetic towards my situation during this time, and their kindness created a positive impact on me. I could see that my teacher was not worried about my absences, but rather showed concern and care for my physical health. My teacher’s compassion for my personal situation was really inspiring, as they encouraged me to become extremely empathetic and understanding at such a young age. My teacher allowed me to take all of my assignments home (even quizzes), and I was able to begin more of a home-school learning experience. She made the school year as clear and simple as possible for me during a very stressful time for myself and for my parents; this is why she has had such a positive impact on myself regarding who I want to become as a teacher.

I have chosen an image of a rainbow for my metaphor for teaching because I believe that teachers can be the bright light that students need during times of distress, just as my grade 6 teacher was for myself.

I think a rainbow can be a representation of teaching because the light that a rainbow emits to the world can brighten up an individual’s day. Compassion and kindness towards all students is very important to me, as I want to be able to provide my future students with the help that will be best suited for them individually. Who I am as a teacher and the lessons that will radiate out into the world (like the lights in a rainbow) will indeed positively impact my future student’s days, and therefore may impact who they become in their future.
